Innovations in Retinal Disease and Ocular Oncology

Singh, Jonathan Sears, Peter Kaiser, Arun Singh

This session will cover a variety of topics in the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases.

Dr. Rishi Singh will discuss recent advances in the management of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Rather than the historical goal of preservation of vision, newer therapies can improve sight and reduce long-term complications. The results from recent clinical trials and potential future therapeutics will be highlighted.

Dr. Arun Singh will present cases that highlight the role of diagnostic methods such as ultrasonography and ne needle aspiration biopsy in the management of intraocular tumors.

Dr. Sears’ laboratory investigations of retinopathy of prematurity have demonstrated that retinovascular protection against hyperoxia can be induced in animals by activating hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) through pharmacological stabilization of HIF by inhibiting HIF prolyl hydroxylase (HIF PHD). The discovery that regulation of the activity of hepatic PHD can alter the course of disease suggests that a practical, easily administered oral therapy may be possible and that global protection of other capillary beds may therefore be achieved by systemic therapy.

The new spectral domain OCT devices o er unparalleled resolution to diagnose and management retinal diseases. The lecture by Dr. Kaiser will explore how to interpret retinal OCT imaging as well as provide tricks to help diagnose certain diseases including using enhanced depth imaging and en face imaging to find diseases not seen with other imaging devices. IN addition, tips on using OCT to manage patients with macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy will be discussed.
