Innovations in Cataract and Refractive Surgery

Dr. Dupps’ presentation will introduce the concept of simulation-based medicine in corneal refractive surgery and will discuss related applications in the study and treatment of keratoconus. Simulation-based medicine involves the development of computational representations of an individual patient’s anterior segment for the purpose of exploring disease propensity and predicting optical outcomes to simulated interventions. Such models have potential applications in assessing ectasia risk and customization of treatment to provide enhanced optical outcomes.

Over the past decade, femtosecond lasers have revolutionized the eld of refractive surgery. Dr. Krueger will discuss how these lasers are now beginning to have an impact on cataract surgery. Laser disruption of the crystalline lens and cornea just prior cataract surgery has opened a new intraocular application to this technology, and has stretched the technical parameters for laser delivery and imaging. Once deciding to embrace this technology, the clinical implications of refractive precision and safety will o er a new, alternative strategy for approaching the surgical removal of a cataract. This technology will have a global impact on the future of cataract surgery.
